Anatomy of a library

Established in 1967 by the Jesuits, the Rizal Library has been providing quality information services to the Ateneo community for years. The newly constructed, four-storey building (still called Rizal Library) is now open for use, with new features and installments that may not be noticed on that first step inside.

Information Commons

Furnished with tables, u-shaped and rectangular, and kiosks which can sit four to ten people, the new Information Commons makes group study, org meetings, and even make-up classes possible.  It is also equipped with LCD projectors and white boards for more efficient group discussions.

Centralized Paying System

Students are given a choice to pay in bulk at the end of the semester for photocopying and printing services, fines for overdue books, and other library services. One time, big time and only in one place—at the front desk on the ground floor.

Graduate Students and Faculty Area

A whole floor dedicated to an exclusive study area for graduate students and faculty members. Includes individual carrels which allow interruption-free study and research.

Off-Campus Accessible Databases and New Computer Software

With a password that can be provided by the library, students and teachers can now access databases such as Jstor outside the campus. And to remain relevant with their services, new software such as Adobe Photoshop have now been installed.

Water Catching System

An innovative way to recycle water, the library’s water catching system is equipped with an elevated tank for removing bacteria and silt. The result is water that can then be used to flush toilets and urinals.

Ventilation System

For optimal preservation of books, it is under properly controlled climate and humidity conditions. In case of fire, the fans are linked to a control system, drawing smoke as well as propelling gas out.
