Ateneo Art Awards Exhibit

Held annually in August

The Ateneo Art Awards are given each year to promising contemporary artists below the age of 36. Past winners include Leeroy New, Kawayan de Guia and Poklong Anading. The works of shortlisted artists are exhibited at the Gallery and range from small paintings to large installations that fill entire rooms.

Interactive: The 12 Senses – Impy Pilapil

2008

The garden in front of the old Rizal Library became a playground of the senses. Each of the 12 colorful, interactive parts of the installation had a sensorial stimulus—a barefoot trail and giant bamboo chimes, for example—proving art can be lots of fun, too.

Balete – Leeroy New

2010

The most talked about creature on campus in 2010 was Leeroy New’s sprawling installation. Made completely out of orange electrical conduit tubes and plastic cable ties, the massive piece was created to juxtapose a traditional folkloric concept with a modern medium.

Last Post – Patricia Eustaquio

2011 (currently ongoing)

The product of Patricia Eustaquio’s residency at New York’s Art Omi makes use of cardboard as a medium, fashioning it into fantastical shapes with graceful contours and jutting edges. The result is “an exploration of composition” that plays with space and form.
