Blue Eagles upended by Fighting Maroons in tight Stage One closer

THE ATENEO Blue Eagles were outlasted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons in a chess edition of the Battle of Katipunan, 1.5-2.5. The contest occurred earlier today, October 8, at the Adamson University Gym in the City of Manila.

Following their concluding match of Stage One, the Blue and White dropped from second to fourth in the standings of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 Men’s Chess Tournament.

Rookie Cedric Kahlel Abris continued his mastery on board one as the lone victor for the Blue Eagles, trouncing Arena Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) Master Francis Apollo Maglipay of the Fighting Maroons.

However, both Knarf Batislaong and Arena FIDE Master Ritchie James Abeleda fell to Arena Grandmaster Io Aristotle Nikolai Calica and Daniel Tagufa of UP on boards two and three, respectively.

Rounding up the day for Ateneo, Team Captain Khalil Kis-ing salvaged a draw for the Blue and White against Roderenz Adra on the fourth board.

The Blue Eagles will return to face their Katipunan rivals anew for second stage action on Saturday, October 11, at 1:00 PM in the same venue.
