DESPITE HIS valiant efforts, Filipino racer Jerrold Mangliwan finished sixth out of seven competitors in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic finals of the Men’s 1500m wheelchair racing event held last August 29. Mangliwan clocked in with a new personal best time of 3:58.24 for the race conducted at the Olympic Stadium.

Unable to match the pace of his opponents, Mangliwan was over 14 seconds slower than Hirokazu Ueyonabaru’s bronze medal time of 3:44.17—missing the top two times by nearly 30 seconds. Finishing in first, second, and third place respectively were Japan’s Tomoki Sato with a time of 3:29.13, the USA’s Raymond Martin at 3:29.72, and Japan’s Ueyonabaru at 3:44.17.

Mangliwan has one last opportunity to snatch a medal in his Paralympics campaign as he competes in the Men’s 100m wheelchair racing T52 finals on Friday, September 3, at 10:00 AM Manila time.
