SCHOOL OF Management Sophomore Central Board (CB) Representative Ryan Yu presented to the CB the new proposals regarding certain curricula in the Ateneo laid out during the Curriculum Committee meeting held on Wednesday, July 25.
Four proposals were made in the said meeting: the creation of a minor in gender studies, the creation of the digital game design and development (DGDD) program, changes in the Master’s Program in Education (MA Ed) curriculum and the creation of new courses.
In order to obtain the gender studies minor, a student must take nine units of required courses (Gender and Development or SA 113, Feminist Theory or SA 148, and Gender Relations or SA 129); a three-unit elective; and three units of thesis or practicum. Course descriptions were not elaborated on.
Meanwhile, DGDD will focus on the proficiency in the technical aspects of game design. Despite the nature of the course, it is distinct from BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology Entrepreneurship.
On the other hand, the creation of the Ignatian Philosophy of Education class is being pushed for the MA Ed program.
Lastly, the following courses have been considered approved unless there will be future objections: DS 135.17 (Social Innovation), Eu 191.2 (Special Topics in European Law: Introduction to Law, Legal Processes, and Concepts), Eu 195.4 (Special Topics in European Politics: Geopolitics in the European Union), Hi 203.3 (Philosophies of History: History of Marxist Political and Historical Ideas), Lit 193.32 (Literature and Ideas III: Literature, Sexuality, and Urban Space), SocSci 110 (Introduction to Global Studies).
Several issues and suggestions were discussed for each proposals.
According to Yu, deliberations by the Curriculum Committee is a stage which all new curriculum changes and additions have to pass through.
“We’re sort of the check-and-balance type of thing [where] we give positive or negative feedback and suggestions for the changes or additions so that… they’ll have the perspective of students and of the admin in mind when they present to the bigger admin.”
However, Yu added, “Hanggang dito lang yung magagawa namin kasi after that, we don’t have jurisdiction (The task of the committee is limited to giving feedback because after that, we don’t have jurisdiction).”
“What happens is it will get sent to the School Forum and the School Council and then once they decide that it’s approved, then it’s officially approved. Our role is basically to screen the proposals,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.
As of press time, the CB has yet to disseminate the information to and consult with their constituents.
