THE ATENEO Chess Teams fail to capture a victory in the Stage 2 matches of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 Chess Tournament. The matches were held earlier today, October 18, at the Adamson University Gym in the City of Manila.

The Men’s Team dueled the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Male Woodpushers, while the Women’s Team suffered 1-3 losses to the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs and the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws.

Representing the Blue and White for the Men’s team are Eowyn Jullado, Cedric Abris, Ritchie James Abeleda, and Team Captain Khalil Kis-ing. Meanwhile, the Women’s team fielded Jiessel Marino, Team Captain Elayza Villa, Alphecca Gonzalez, and Francine Elaine Magpily.

Men’s vs UST

Kickstarting their campaign, both Abeleda and Kis-ing settled for draws against UST’s Lee Roi Palma and Mark Gerald Reyes, respectively. Unable to redeem his teammates, Jullado succumbed against Christian Mark Daluz, while Abris failed to take down Chester Neil Reyes of the Male Woodpushers, leading to a 1-3 overall defeat.

Women’s vs NU

For the first meeting of the game day, Marino secured the sole victory of the team against Allaney Doroy of the Lady Bulldogs. Villa then faltered against NU’s Jersey Marticio in Board 2. Suffering the same fate, Gonzales and Magpily absorbed defeats against Jelaine Adriano and Kyla Dalagan, respectively, leading to a 1-3 loss for the team.

Women’s vs FEU

Determined to bounce back from the loss against NU, Gonzales came out with a strong start and secured a victory over FEU’s April Joy Calos. However, this ended up as the only point for the team, since Marino and Villa were outwitted by Mhage Sebastian and Samantha Umayan, respectively. Then, on Board 4, rookie Magpily fell short of victory in her battle against Franchesca Largo.

After today’s outings, the Men’s team aims to regain momentum against the Adamson Soaring Falcons, while the Women’s team looks to bounce back against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons. Both matches will occur tomorrow, October 19, at 8:00 AM in the same venue.
