THE ATENEO Women’s Lawn Tennis Team (AWLTT) concluded their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 campaign with a loss to the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Tennisters, 1-4. The contest was held earlier today at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in the City of Manila.

This result officially ends Ateneo’s season at 0-8, sealing their fifth-place finish in the league’s standings.

Chelsea Roque kicked off the final matchday for the Blue Eagles, taking on DLSU’s Bea Gomez. The two engaged in a tightly-contested first set, trading blows before Roque eked out a 6-4 victory. Determined to secure a crucial point for Ateneo, Roque battled fiercely in the second set. However, Gomez remained relentless, managing to force a 5-5 deadlock. Refusing to waver, Roque dug deep in her bag of tricks, ultimately sealing the set at 7-5 to clinch Ateneo’s first and only team-tie point of the day.

Raizel Coco then faced Lady Tennister Jam Madis in the second singles bout but fell in back-to-back 0-6 shutout sets, placing the team-tie at one apiece.

Ending the singles campaign for the Blue Eagles, Althea Martirez went head-to-head with Maikee Vicencio of the Taft-based squad. However, Martirez failed to respond to Vicencio’s attacks, leading to a straight-set defeat for the sophomore, 1-6, 0-6.

In the first doubles match of the day, Adrianna Cabahug and Audrey Ruiz battled against Admor Idjao and Precious Miranda of the Lady Tennisters. Initially keeping up with the opposition, Cabahug and Ruiz were unable to maintain their energy as they fell to their Green and White counterparts in straight sets, 2-6, 1-6.

With the team-tie score already at 1-3, Zaina Omar and Angela Buyante aimed to end their Season 87 campaign on a high note against DLSU’s Arriane Nillasca and Althea Liwag. Despite showing grit and determination, the duo struggled to find their rhythm, falling short and suffering 1-6 defeats in both sets.

Now that the season is officially in the books, the Blue Eagles set their sights on redemption and growth for their campaign next season.
