THE ATENEO Swimming Team (AST) continued their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 stint by collecting 13 more medals on the second day of competition. The events took place yesterday at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

The Men’s Team remains a cut above the rest at first in the standings with a total of 255 points with their nine gold, five silver, and two bronze medals. Meanwhile, the Women’s Team stands at third with 146 points after collecting two gold, five silver, and two bronze medals. After two days of high-caliber performances, the Blue and White have tallied a total of 25 medals for Ateneo.

Freestyle

Most Valuable Player race frontrunner Miguel Barreto sustained his superior swims on Day 2 after his fourth-consecutive win in the tournament. With a time of 4:03.35, Barreto clinched another gold in the 400m Freestyle. Marco Daos followed suit in second place in the same category after clocking in at 4:09.39, while Joshua Del Rio (4:14.12) placed fifth.

In the Women’s division, Mishka Sy collected her third medal of the tournament after finishing second in the 400m Freestyle event with a time of 4:41.31.

Breaststroke

The Blue Eagles’ unmistakable skill shone through the Breaststroke event, as veteran skipper Rian Tirol claimed the gold medal at the Men’s 50m at 29.12. Meanwhile, Rafael Isip clocked in 29.41 at the same event to clinch silver.

On the women’s side, Annika Isip secured a silver medal by covering the same distance to finish at 34.20. Charllyn Romanos also showed remarkable heart throughout the final heat to tie with De La Salle University’s (DLSU) Micah Mina for fourth at 34.60.

Butterfly

The 100m Butterfly event of Day 2 featured another exceptional display from the Barreto Brothers. M. Barreto (56.15) claimed the gold, while Rafael Barreto (56.23)  followed suit 0.08 seconds later for the silver.

The Women’s Team also achieved a podium finish in the 1o00m Butterfly as Sam Doragos clocked in at 1:06.71 for the bronze.

Backstroke

In the 200m race, standout rookie Ivo Enot dominated the Men’s Division, taking gold with a time of 2:10.55.

For the Women’s team, meanwhile, Sy earned a strong silver after finishing at 2:24.74. Close behind were Samantha Coronel (2:27.69) and Lora Amoguis (2:30.82), who took the fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Relay

The 4×100 Freestyle Relay events proved to be another glorious highlight for the Blue Eagles, as the Men’s division set a new UAAP record while the Women’s team clinched silver.

An outstanding squad composed of Charles Ticbaen, Nathan Sason, Renzo Tirol, and R. Barreto broke the previous record set by DLSU in 2022, after a solid time of 3:34.21.

On the other hand, the Women’s Team quartet Maiki Gonzaga, Romanos, Isip, and Kimi Manuel conquered the 4×100 relay in 4:08.46 to add another 12 points to their slate.

Still hungry to prove themselves as the best in the league, the Blue Eagles will continue to take to the waters today in the same venue.
