MOVING PAST their tough University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 opener, the Ateneo Women’s Chess Team continued to rack up points with a 3-1 victory over the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons. The match took place earlier today at the Adamson University Gym in the City of Manila.

The win puts the surging Blue Eagles at the second seed with 4.0 match points and 7.5 game points.

Prevailing against the Fighting Maroons were Team Captain Kristine Flores, Elayza Villa, Lexie Hernandez, and Alphecca Gonzales.

Flores and Gonzales secured stalemates on boards one and four against UP’s Jarel Lacambra and Raiza Locmayoan, respectively—contributing a total of one point to the team’s score.

Not wanting to repeat her previous draw against Adamson last Sunday, Villa advanced through her board against Precious Ferrer and seized the Diliman-based player’s pieces to earn one more point for the team. Meanwhile, rookie Blue Eagle Hernandez continued her impressive winning streak as she overpowered UP’s Jallen Agra, showing her control of the 64 squares to earn Ateneo’s third and final point of the day, 3-1.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles’ next game will be against the De La Salle University Lady Woodpushers on October 19, Saturday, 1:00 PM, at the same venue.

Current Standings (Match Points [Game Points]):

  1. FEU Lady Tamaraws (4.0 [8.0])
  2. ATENEO Blue Eagles (4.0 [7.5])
  3. DLSU Lady Woodpushers (4.0 [6.0])
