THE ATENEO Women’s Football Team (AWFT) was resoundingly denied by archrivals De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Booters in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 Women’s Football Tournament opener, 0-5. The match was held earlier today at the University of the Philippines Diliman Football Field.

At the outset, the Blue Eagles exhibited strong offensive aggression led by rookie forward Angely Alferez, who made numerous incursions that were otherwise thwarted by DLSU defenders. In the 13th minute, defender Patricia Francisco likewise showcased her mettle by dispossessing DLSU’s Maria Lourdes Layacan near the goal.

Following a brief break in the 14th minute, possession and momentum shifted between the teams. DLSU’s Alisha Del Campo broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, scoring the first goal. Shortly after, a well-coordinated effort by Lady Booters Maria Lacayan and Tenelyn Otom resulted in a second goal in the 23rd minute, placing the Blue Eagles at a 0-2 hole. Despite several close calls, Ateneo failed to convert their chances for the remainder of the first half.

In hopes for a second-half comeback, the Blue Eagles bolstered their defense with Gabrielle Tuaño making crucial interventions in the 52nd and 55th minutes, thwarting DLSU’s attempts at breaching the net. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Adrielle Lee showcased unwavering resolve, deflecting the relentless barrage of even more La Salle attacks aimed at widening the deficit. However, Lee’s efforts were ultimately eclipsed as two well-placed, low-driven shots by the Lady Booters found their respective marks at the  69th and 72nd minutes, stretching the DLSU lead to an ominous 4-0.

Despite their defensive efforts, the Blue Eagles were unable to prevent a fifth goal in the 84th minute that brought the score to a lopsided 0-5. In the last minute, the Katipunan-based unit made a last-ditch effort to avoid a shutout but was denied by the DLSU keeper.

Ateneo hopes to turn the tide in their next matchup against the reigning champions Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraw Booters on Saturday, March 9, at 4:30 PM at the same venue.
