THE ATENEO Chess Teams closed out the second day of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 Chess Tournament with both the Men’s and Women’s teams suffering back-to-back losses. The second day of the tournament was held earlier at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Diliman Sports Complex in Quezon City.
Fresh from their opening loss, the Men’s Team entered the second day of competition looking to bounce back from their 0-4 defeat. However, they were still unable to topple the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Woodpushers, closing out at 1-3. The Women’s Team came away with a closer fight, faltering to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Lady Woodpushers, 1.2-2.5.
First up for the Blue Eagles was Team Captain Joshua Mikyle Tan, who fell short to DLSU’s Cyril Telesforo. Meanwhile, Christopher Kis-ing put up a tough fight against Daniel Lemi, giving the Men’s Team their first winning board of the season. However, rookies Paul Llanillo and Rico Calderon failed to replicate Kis-ing’s success, bowing out to Green Archers Jester Sistoza and Francis Guimalan, respectively.
The Women’s Team’s second day of action against UST was a mirror image of their debut match, with their opponents going up 2-0 to start the afternoon. Ateneo’s Laila Nadera and Glesit Tatoy conceded points to Lady Woodpushers Maycydel Fajardo and Josemier Panol. On the other hand, yesterday’s lone victor Alexis Oseña continued her dominant display as she came away with Ateneo’s first win of the afternoon against Rohanisah Buto on the third board. To cap off the day, Kristine Flores and Jamaica Lagrio went head-to-head in a grinded out match that ended in a stalemate.
The Ateneo Chess Teams look to find their footing as the Men’s Team takes on the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and the Women’s Team goes up against the DLSU Lady Woodpushers on Wednesday at 2:00 PM at the FEU Diliman Sports Complex.
