THE ATENEO Women’s Chess Team settled for an appealing 2-2 draw against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Female Woodpushers in the final elimination game of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 Chess Tournament earlier today at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Engineering Building in Manila City.

After the stalemate versus UST, the Blue Eagles rose to a 1-3-2 win-draw-loss record as the Blue and White closed out the eliminations with an accumulative score of 11.5. By accruing enough points, Ateneo managed to deadlock scores with the third-ranked Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons, who hold a similar standing of 11.5 and a 3-1-2 record in the current rankings.

Alexis Oseña, Glesit Tatoy, Laila Nadera, and Kristine Flores took up the first, second, third, and fourth boards, respectively, for Ateneo’s first-round finale. Boards one and two saw Ateneo and the UST Female Woodpushers split games, with Oseña prevailing over UST’s Glenderlyn Anana and Tatoy succumbing to Maycydel Fajardo.

Following this win-loss tradeoff between the two teams, Ateneo sustained a 1-1 record with a spot in the Final Four still in sight. The latter half of the contest saw stalemates exchanged between Nadera and Flores and their respective foes, UST’s Jamaica Lagrio and Alexis Suede. As the match concluded with a score of 2-2, the Blue and White obtained enough points to send them to the finals and an opportunity to fight for the championship title.

The Ateneo Women’s Chess Team is set to compete in the Final Four on Sunday, June 12, with a matchup against the National University Lady Bulldogs at 9:00 AM and with the De La Salle University at 3:30 PM at the FEU Engineering Building.
