THE ATENEO Men’s and Women’s Chess Teams embarked on day two of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Chess Tournament, with the former recording a loss and the latter slotting in another stalemate. Day two of the chess tourney was held earlier today at the Far Eastern University (FEU) Gym in Manila City.

It was a tumultuous outing for the Ateneo Men’s Team as they fell to the Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons in Board 2 with a final score of 1.5-2.5. The Women’s Team produced a slightly better performance after drawing with the AdU Lady Falcons, 2-2. Following the results at the end of the day, both teams remain winless with the Men’s Team at 0-0-2 and the Women’s Team at 0-2-0.

First up for the Blue Eagles was veteran Alexander Santos, who bowed out to AdU’s Alfonzo Olendo. It was a grinded-out affair for Atenean Jaime De Veyra Jr. in his match-up against Matt Ramos of ADU, as the result of their match was a stalemate. With AdU up after two matches, 1.5-0.5, Paolo Villa sought to deliver the Blue Eagles their first win of the day yet was defeated as well by Adamson’s Jalen Lacambra.

Atenean Joshua Tan also came up short of a win against the Soaring Falcons’ Erick Valdez—himself a rookie—as Valdez secured the win for Adamson. With day two coming to a close, the Blue Eagles now stand at a 0-0-2 win-draw-loss record for the UAAP Season 84 Men’s Chess Tournament.

The Ateneo Women’s Team picked up their second consecutive draw of the season after being held by the Lady Falcons. Looking to improve their overall standing for their UAAP campaign, the Blue Eagles started strong with two convincing wins via veteran Alexis Oseña and rookie Glesit Tatoy in boards one and two, respectively.

Looking to avoid defeat, AdU fought back on boards three and four to secure a draw after Lady Falcons Robelle De Jesus and Jellie Magro outplayed Ateneo’s Laila Nadera and Jiessel Marino, respectively, to pick up two wins for AdU. With both teams securing two wins apiece, the overall matchup ended 2-2. The Ateneo Women’s Chess Team now stands at a 0-2-0 win-draw-loss record for the tourney.

In search of their first win of the season, the Ateneo Men’s Chess Team will face the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers. Also hoping to pick up a win after two draws to start the season, the Ateneo Women’s Chess Team will face the De La Salle University Green Archers.

Both teams will play the third Tie of the UAAP Chess Tournament on June 5, 9:00 AM, at the FEU Gym in Manila City.
