THE ATENEO Women’s Fencing Team captured a bronze medal on the second day of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Fencing Tournament on Wednesday, February 12, at Paco Arena, Manila City. The events of the day saw the Lady Eagles compete in the Individial Epee and Saber categories.

Women’s Epee Individual

Rookie Mia Esteban was eliminated in the poulings round with a standing of 0-4. Returning Season 81 Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Maxine Esteban survived the poulings round with a 1-3 record.

In the semifinals, Maxine went up against Mira Dorimon of University of Santo Tomas (UST) but lost in a narrow match, 14-13, and finished in sixth place.

Women’s Saber Individual

Mia was eliminated in the poulings round with another 0-4 finish. Meanwhile, the elder Esteban finished the poulings with a 2-2 match tally.

Maxine Esteban faced UST’s Precious Sapungan in the quarterfinals and emerged victorious with a 15-10 score.

She then went head to head with University of the East’s Evielyn Joy Javinar where she took a heavy loss, 6-15. Nonetheless, Esteban finished third in the category alongside UST’s Fhaym Sarrondo. Javinar went on to win silver.

“Saber is easier for me because the rules are the same with foil. There’s a right of way. I like Saber more because it’s faster, not slow and boring,” Maxine Esteban reflected after her performance in the Epee category.

In a bid to stay in contention for the overall title, the Lady Eagles will look to rack up medals in the Women’s Foil Team event on February 13, at the Paco Arena, Manila City.
