Ilocos Norte: The Marcos Comeback

The Marcos family regained political prominence as former first lady Imelda Marcos won as second district representative, daughter Imee became governor and son Bongbong gained a seat in the Senate.

Ilocos Sur: Family Affair

The Singson clan created a political dynasty as Chavit Singson returned as governor, his son, Ronald was re-elected as first district representative, his niece Eva became Vigan mayor, while another son, Ryan became the vice mayor.

Isabela: A Governor weeps

Governor Grace Padaca who ended the Dy family’s 34-year hold on governorship in 2004 lost to Faustino Dy III. Reports said that her anti-logging drive that stopped illegal logging in the province cost her the governorship.

Pampanga: A priest’s loss, a president’s win

In 2007, Fr. Ed Panlilio won as governor against two administration-backed candidates. This election, he lost by a landslide in a rematch against Lilia Pineda, the wife of suspected jueteng lord Bong Pineda.

In the same province, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo won as second district representative. Speculation is rife that she will seek the House speakership and push for Charter change, with her supposedly as Prime Minister.

Iloilo City: Father and Son

Former Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales Sr. lost his mayoralty bid. His son, Raul Jr. also lost re-election for congressman. As of press time, they filed a protest in the House of Representatives.

Leyte: Substitution

Substituting her husband, disqualified congressional candidate and actor Richard Gomez, Lucy Torres-Gomez won as fourth district representative.

Maguindanao: Vindication

Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu won as governor over the Ampatuan’s anointed candidate, Datu Ombra Sinsuat. His running mate, Ismael Mastura also won as vice-governor against Andal Ampatuan Sr. Ampatuan is the prime suspect of the Maguindanao massacre last year.

Davao City: Speakers’ fall

After losing the mayoralty race, House Speaker Prospero Nograles filed an electoral protest alleging massive fraud against his opponent, Sara Duterte.

Sarangani: The Boxing congressman

Manny Pacquiao won as representative for the lone district of Sarangani. Earlier in 2007, he lost his bid to be Congressman of his hometown in General Santos.
