Worn and weary, the Ateneo Blue Eagles found themselves facing a fourth quarter surge for the second time this week. Unlike the EAC Generals, however, the FEU Tamaraws would not be denied. Though working from behind for much of the game, the Tamaraws’ physical game overpowered the Blue Eagles, ending their four game winning streak, 76-67, in the Father Martin Cup on May 9 in the San Beda Gym.

Key to the Tamaraws’ victory was Cameroon native Pipo Nondou. Chipping in fifteen points, it was Nondou’s work on both the offensive and defensive glass that kept the Tamaraws in the game for the first three quarters. Although the Blue Eagles had the advantage for most of the game, FEU stayed within striking distance by throttling Ateneo’s fast break through solid transition defense and limiting turnovers. In the decisive fourth quarter, FEU clamped down defensively turning Ateneo into a jump-shooting team and taking a lead they would never relinquish with 5:22 remaining.

The game was the second in a back-to-back set for the Blue Eagles, which could have contributed to the lack of offensive thrust. However, it must also be noted that the Tamaraws were two players short, with key players Aldrich Ramos and JR Cawaling fulfilling Smart-Gilas commitments.

The win gives the Tamaraws the outright lead in Group A of the Father Martin Cup. The top two finishers in each group advance to the quarterfinals. Ateneo’s next game is on May 11 at 3 pm.
