THE ATENEO Lady Eagles’ losing streak rises to five in an emphatic loss to archrivals the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 56-82, to cap off their first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81 Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, October 10, at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City.
Jhazmin Joson topscored for the Blue and White with nine points while tallying three dimes and two steals to her name. Both Melissa Newsome and Alyssa Villamor also chipped in with eight points apiece and grabbed six and seven rebounds, respectively.
Rookies Angel Gino-gino and Joanne Nimes each racked up eight points as well with each of them knocking down two triples. The Katipunan-based squad, who never held on to the lead, was entirely outperformed by DLSU, with the Archers going up by as much as 45 points.
Khate Castillo led the scoring chart for the Lady Archers with 19 points on an efficient 8/13 (62%) shooting from the field including a trio of threes. Kathleen Nuñez did not let herself get far behind in the stat sheet, adding 16 markers on a 7/11 (64%) shooting clip to go along with three steals.
Castillo led a 19-1 DLSU run that stretched through the first two frames to dig Ateneo an early burial as the Lady Archers walked into the half with a dominant 32-point lead, 12-44.
The Lady Archers went on to close out the match in a dominant fashion, 56-82, dropping the Lady Eagles to a 2-5 record after the first round of the tourney.
