THE ATENEO Student Judicial Court (SJC) released a resolution on the appointment of the Commissioners of the Ateneo Commission on Elections (COMELEC) for the Academic Year 2017-2018 on April 19.

Carl Garcia and Rafael Moreno were named as Human Resources Commissioner and Finance Commissioner, respectively.

Moreover, Frances Nangan was appointed as Communications Commissioner, while Jose Tancangco was appointed as Secretariat Commissioner.

According to Article XII, Section 2.3.1 of the 2016 Constitution, all outgoing commissioners not seeking re-appointment are tasked to appoint the new set of Commissioners.

Outgoing Board members open applications for the vacant positions, then the names of the accepted applicants are submitted to the SJC for review. After which, the ad hoc committee approves and appoints the new set of commissioners.

Sentiments

In an interview with The GUIDON, Outgoing Chief Commissioner and Human Resource Commissioner Dom Rañises said that he is confident with the new set of COMELEC commissioners.

“I have seen these individuals work and grow over time, and it really is my privilege to present such a curious, impassioned and just set of commissioners to lead the Commission for a new term” he said.

Rañises has also called for the new commissioners to value the importance of being able to listen, adding that better decisions can be made with being able to do so.

“COMELEC has probably one of the toughest jobs in the Sanggunian, as its largely thankless and is prone to criticism, but they greatest skill a Commissioner can ever carry is to listen, and understand” he said.
