THE ATENEO Blue and Lady Eagles continued their University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season with matches against Adamson University and University of the Philippines (UP) on Sunday, February 19 at De La Salle University in Manila.

Rookie Gavin Ong continues to shine

The Blue Eagles entered their fifth tie with two and a half points from their last four matches at the bottom of the table. To further augment their problems, the Blue Eagles entered their fifth and sixth matches without their reliable Team Captain Ricki Yao.

Looking to turn their favors around against a strong Adamson University lineup, Renzo Marquez, Jolo Lat and Gavin Ong took on the responsibility of donning the Blue and White, with rookie Lance Ting taking Yao’s spot on the lineup.

Though Marquez, Ong and Ting were unable to outwit their Adamson counterparts, Lat recorded his second win of the UAAP season on board 4 to take Ateneo ahead of UP on points before a crucial bottom of the table clash against the Katipunan-based rivals.

The Eagles faced the Maroons in the second match of the day and sixth match of the round-robin, with the blue woodpushers managing to claim their first team-tie draw via wins from rookie Gavin Ong and veteran Renzo Marquez. The Blue Eagles are aiming to hold their lead against last-placed UP in the last round of the tournament.

De Ocampo manages milestone win against Adamson

The Lady Eagles were only able to manage a solitary point from their matchup against the Maroons, with Brena Membrere producing yet another winning performance. The team captain continued to produce for the struggling Lady Eagles to keep them a point ahead of eighth-placed National University (NU).

The second match of the day saw the Blue and White take on Katipunan rivals UP in a tense bottom of the table match, with UP and Ateneo positioned at sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Lady Eagles Aryanne De Ocampo, Membrere, Ana De Duque and Jasmine Principe were all on the lineup for the crucial clash against UP. Despite a disappointing and costly 1-3 result in favor of UP, De Ocampo recorded a milestone first win in over two years of UAAP chess.

Both Blue and Lady Eagles will be looking to finish their campaign on a high note as they take on National University (NU) on Sunday, February 26 at De La Salle University in Manila.
