THE ATENEO Blue and Lady Eagles both finished fifth place in Season 78 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Taekwondo tournament that concluded on Friday, October 23 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Ateneo de Manila University.

Welterweight Joel Alejandro and flyweight Aaron Agojo both took home gold medals for the blue jins, while finweight Irene Therese Bermejo and flyweight Weedee Valenzuela won silver and bronze medals, respectively, for the women’s team.

The fourth day of the tournament saw the lady jins outclass National University (5-2) and Far Eastern University (5-2), highlighted by the home team’s resident finweight. Bermejo forced the referee to end her matches early against the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tamaraws with dominant scores of 14-2 and 15-1, respectively.

Meanwhile, Agojo was one of the few bright spots for the blue jins, as his team lost to Far Eastern University (3-4) and De La Salle University (2-5) during the day. The team captain similarly forced the referees to stop his match due to the insurmountable gaps in the scores.

The Blue and Lady Eagles shared 2-4 records to end Season 78, a slight improvement from last season where they both finished with a single win against five losses. They also end this year with a fifth place finish in poomsae, the forms exhibition event, that concluded on Wednesday, October 21.
