Lady Eagles suffer heartbreaker to DLSU in PFF Women’s Cup semifinals

THE ATENEO Lady Eagles lost against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers, 0-1, on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Despite getting the ball into the final third more often than their opponent to create more possible chances to score, the ladies from Katipunan suffered the singular goal of the match that made all the difference.

After a tightly contested first half, the game only became more free-flowing in the second as most chances for both teams were created in the latter 45-minute period.

Four players in attacking roles–Antonnete Amoncio, Maria Teresa Bernardo, Camille Rodriguez, and super sub Martie Bautista–all caused the DLSU defense problems. At different times in the game, these booters were switched around to give the Ateneo offense different looks and options. Towards the end of the game, Amoncio became the Ateneo’s main threat, as she launched a bevy of dangerous crosses into the opponent’s box.

However, all the Ateneo’s efforts to score were undone in the 85th minute by DLSU’s Chelo Hodges. The Lady Archer received a well weighted ball from the midfield as she found space on the lefthand side of the Ateneo backline. Hodges composed herself and directed the ball towards the far post, beating Ateneo keeper Eva Katherine Montelibano.

This loss knocks the lady booters out of the 2nd Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Women’s Invitational Cup.
