THE AVERAGE student can down several pieces of polvoron in one-and-a-half minutes, but during the School of Science and Engineering (SOSE) Week, Sanggunian President Gio Tingson proved that it can be done in 30 seconds.
The polvoron-eating contest was just one of the many activities during SOSE Week on January 11 to 15, themed “Bonaroo,” which means “wonderful” in circus jargon.
The event was held in different parts of the Loyola Schools (LS) campus.
SOSE for everyone
According to Executive Officer Carl Co (IV BS MIS), the weeklong event was organized not just for SOSE students but for all Ateneans.
Most people claim that SOSE students are serious, said Encarnacion. “This [SOSE week] is not that serious. We aimed to make it fun,” said Project Head Patricia Encarnacion.
SOSE Week intended to show non-SOSE majors what the school is about. “We want… to let other LS students see that we [also] know how to have fun and to let them appreciate what we do,” said Co.
“It’s also for SOSE students to be proud of SOSE and for them to be aware that there is a school week,” Co added.
SOSE Chairperson Lauren Santos and Encarnacion agreed that the event put premium on the awareness that SOSE is just as important as the other schools.
“SOSE Week showcases what it has contributed to the academe and shows what it has given to the school,” said Executive Officer Raiza Osi.
Unity
Apart from promoting awareness of the school, SOSE Week also aimed to bring SOSE students together. Another main objective is student integration, said Santos.
After seeing the need to get the students together, the event was directed to round up all SOSE students in celebration of what they are part of.
“SOSE students are not really that much [bonded]. Hindi sila magkakasama (they’re not together),” she said.
Co attributes this to the diversity of the branches of SOSE.
“There’s engineering, there’s physics, there’s biology. Medyo magkakalayo (They are quite far from each other). It’s good to have SOSE Week to bring all the students together for unity,” Co said.
Due changes
Co said that the organizers wanted the activities to be more flexible so that non-SOSE students could appreciate the booths and exhibits.
Encarnacion said that last school year, she was not aware of the happenings and events of SOSE Week. She added that this year, the promotions helped make the celebration more known to the student body.
“A lot of people [knew] about it because I found out that the games are [popular] to the people, like the polvoron booth and the Pepsi drinking booth,” Encarnacion said.
However, Santos admitted that not all SOSE departments were represented by the booths. She added that despite this, they were well-represented in the exhibit.
