Trikes still allowed along Katipunan

A TRAFFIC bulletin released by the University Physical Plant (UPP) on August 14, Thursday, said that tricycles will not be allowed on Katipunan Avenue starting Friday, August 15. According to UPP Administrator Leoncio Miralao, however, they will still be allowed along Katipunan.

In a telephone interview with The GUIDON at 9pm Thursday, Miralao said that the presidents of the Loyola Heights (LH) and Loyola Pansol (LP) Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) went to the Quezon City Hall at noon Thursday and negotiated with Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista.

LP TODA President Alex Baay said the City Hall issued them a moratorium for one month, which will allow for dialogue regarding the issue. As of now, it’s “business as usual” for the tricycles, he said.

The bulletin released today said that, starting Friday, tricycles will not be allowed on major thoroughfares. Katipunan Avenue is part of C5, one of Metro Manila’s major thoroughfares.

According to Baay, however, Katipunan Avenue is an exception to that rule.

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel informed tricycle drivers of the supposed ban this morning.

This week, the MMDA also implemented a new traffic scheme in Katipunan, which involved the relocation of U-turn slots near National Bookstore and Miriam College.

Commuters may now only take U-turns under the Katipunan flyover and near the University of the Philippines.
