FILIPINO ARTIST David Medalla was conferred the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi for his significant contributions to contemporary art in the Philippines and abroad.
The opening of Medalla’s exhibit “Tuloy Po Kayo” at the Ateneo Art Gallery followed the convocation held yesterday, November 27, at the Leong Hall Auditorium.
Medalla was recognized for his work in contemporary and multidisciplinary art. Some of his most popular works include the kinetic sculpture Bubble Machines (1963) and participatory art A Stitch in Time (1967/1968).
The Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi is the highest university award conferred on individuals or organizations that have “succeeded in steering the national consciousness towards a clarification, development and enhancement of the essential Filipino image,” as stated in the pamphlet given out during the event.
Some of the past awardees of the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi include Reynaldo Ileto (2012), Jose F. Lacaba (2009), Nicanor Tiongson (2009), Marilou Diaz-Abaya (2006), Rolando Tinio (2004), Lucresia Kasilag (1999), Nick Joaquin (1997), Apo Hiking Society (1991) and Fr. Roque Ferriols, SJ (1989).
