THE RIZAL Library, together with the National Library of Korea (NLK), launched the “Window on Korea” collection last August 29.

In a press release sent to The GUIDON, the said project is meant for “promoting and building better understanding of Korea through partnerships with leading libraries around the world.”

University President Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ said, “Windows are also mirrors. And this time, these windows are mirrors that help us see the humanity that we all share and celebrate.”

“This event was born out of understanding and desire. The university is always opening the windows of the minds and the hearts of the students,” he added.

Initially, the collection will have 2,000 library materials such as books, periodicals and DVDs. In the next five years, 200-300 volumes will be added annually.

NLK provided furniture and equipment like bookshelves and computers for the collection.

“Eventually, we hope that it would grow into something bigger, like a program or a center, and that’s a very important part of sharing cultures between two countries,” Vice President for the Loyola Schools John Paul Vergara said.

Korean Language Instructor Sarah Lipura said, “[The] collection will promote better understanding of Korea as our neighbor and longtime ally and thus contribute to the strengthening of [Philippine-Korean] relations.”

The ribbon cutting was led by Villarin, Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Hye Min Lee, NLK Digital Library Department Head Tae Young Park, Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines Director Seong Un-Hwang, Vice President for University and Global Relations Fr. Jose Cruz, SJ, and Rizal Library Director Lourdes David.
