THE ATENEO Golf Teams inched one step closer to securing podium finishes in the inaugural University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 Golf Tournament. Competitors from the five participating teams met at the course earlier today, May 13, at the Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club in the City of Tagaytay.

Following the end of round three, both the Men’s and Women’s Teams maintained their standings of third and second in the team tally.

Glenn Unabia, Schmuel Tan, Juan Escano, and Tyler Zamuco represented Ateneo in the men’s division. Meanwhile, Monique Mendoza, Simi Tinio, Andie Joson, and Shane Tan controlled the fairway on the women’s side.

Men’s Tournament

Escano was star of the show after recording 74 strokes, just two above par and an increase from his scores of 80 and 86 from the previous legs. This performance proved to be the day’s second best, just one swing behind the University of the Philippines’ Joshua Buenaventura.

Unabia and Tan also had commendable outings, tallying scores of 77 and 82, respectively. Their poise on the turf allowed them to place seventh and 12th for the round.

Not to be outdone, Zamuco made the most of his first stint for the Katipunan-based squad, with a score of 89 to finish 15th in the standings of the third leg.

Women’s Tournament

Mendoza led her squad with the fewest number of strokes recorded at 83, 11 above par. Her performances provided her with the boost to place second in the women’s individual ranks, totalling a score of 261.

Alongside her, Tinio and Joson tallied 91 and 96 strokes, respectively. This places Tinio in fifth place on the women’s individual ranks, with a score of 264. Meanwhile, Joson trails Mendoza at seventh place in the overall women’s rankings, with 284.

Looking to make the most of her time on the fairway, Tan recorded a score of 97, which was enough to place her ninth in the standings in her first appearance.

Aiming to end with a string of good performances, the Blue Eagles conclude their UAAP campaign in the fourth and final leg of the tournament tomorrow, 7:00 AM, at the same venue.
