ENDING THEIR first venture in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Ateneo Golf Teams (AGT) maintained their top-three placements to bring home two maiden medals. The culminating day of the UAAP Golf Season 88 tournament occurred today, May 14, at the Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club in the City of Tagaytay.
The Men’s Team ended their podium chase by placing third in the men’s team ranking with a tally of 938 strokes. Meanwhile, the Women’s Team held the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons back to hold on to second place after sporting a team score of 1,077.
Spearheading the Men’s division to the podium for Ateneo were Schmuel Tan, Mich Romero, Juan Escano, and Glenn Unabia. For the first runner-up Women’s Team, Simi Tonio, Andie Joson, Renee Heredia, and individual bronze-medal winner Monique Mendoza elevated the Blue and White’s competitive edge.

Tan led the way for Ateneo in the final round of the tournament, carding a 74 to put himself at second spot in today’s individual stroke count tally, behind De La Salle University’s (DLSU) Perry Bucay.
Romero supplemented his teammate’s performance as he ended his 18 holes with a 79-stroke count. Escano and Unabia followed suit, both tallying 81 to round up the statsheet for the Blue and White.
Notably, Unabia was able to end his UAAP stint amongst the field’s best, as he placed fourth in the overall individual stroke leaders in the championships, logging a 308 count over the 72 holes played.
Women’s Tournament
In the last stretch of the tournament, Mendoza showcased her excellence by recording 88 strokes in the final round which led the Blue Eagles in the women’s division. The performance finished off her campaign at third in the women’s individual rankings, awarding her the bronze medal to cap off her UAAP debut.
Succeeding Mendoza for today’s outing were Tinio and Joson who delivered 92 and 94 strokes, respectively. Tinio concluded her four-day event at sixth in the women’s individual ranks, with Joson close behind at seventh.
