THE ATENEO Women’s Tennis Team (AWTT) remained winless in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 Women’s Tennis Tournament after a 1–4 loss to the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons. The second round elimination match was held earlier today, March 14, at the Colegio San Agustin Tennis Stadium in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

With this result, the Ateneo Blue Eagles find themselves in the last place of the tournament, still looking for their first win as the end of their campaign draws near.

Starting the singles match, Ateneo found an early breakthrough as Althea Ong delivered a composed performance to secure the Blue Eagles’ lone point of the game. Ong controlled the match from the outset, defeating UP’s Marielle Jarata in straight sets, 6–2, 6–3, to give Ateneo a promising start.

Momentum soon shifted away from the Blue and White in the succeeding matches. In the second singles game, Althea Rose Martinez fell to UP’s Jufe Cocoy in straight sets, 1-6, 1-6, evening the team tie score. In the third singles match, Casey Padilla looked to secure the team tie, challenging UP’s Maria Divinagracia. Despite putting up a good fight, she was ultimately outplayed, 4-6, 1-6.

Opening the doubles event, Chelsea Roque and Angela Buyante aimed to regain the Blue and White’s rhythm. However, the duo struggled to keep up with UP’s Anika Cari and Paula Uy, 1-6, 0-6.

To wrap up the Blue Eagle’s campaign for the day, Zaina Omar and Eloh Costollo went up against UP’s Joshea Malazarte and Sidney Enriquez. While the tandem exerted their best effort, Omar and Costollo failed to outpace the Fighting Maroons as they struggled to find their footing, ending the match at 0-6, 0-6.

Hoping to secure their first win of the season, the AWTT prepares to face the De La Salle University Lady Tennisters tomorrow, March 15, in the same venue.
