THE ATENEO Chess Teams concluded day three of their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 campaigns with varying results. The Men’s team captured victory, while the Women’s team remained winless after the set of matches held earlier today at the FEU Tech Building in the City of Manila.

Overcoming the Far Eastern University (FEU) Woodpushers 2 (2.5) – 0 (1.5), the Men’s Team improved their record to a 2-0-1 win-loss-draw card. Meanwhile, in the Women’s division, Ateneo’s struggles continued as they were dealt their second loss of the tournament, falling to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Lady Woodpushers, 0 (1.5) – 2 (2.5) dropping their overall record for the tournament to 0-0-2.

Today’s lineup for the Ateneo Men’s Chess Team included Paul Matthew Llanillo, Jasper Faeldonia, Khalil Kis-ing, and Janmyl Tisado manning boards one, two, three, and four respectively. In board two, Team Captain Kis-ing succumbed to FEU’s Christian Olaybal. In just his third match for the Blue Eagles, rookie Faeldonia kept his unscathed record intact, capturing a draw after an intense battle with Jeth Morado. Meanwhile, in boards one and four, veteran member Llanillo and rookie Tisado both landed victories as they conquered Hans Olorosisimo and Juan Cantela respectively.

Representing the Blue and White in the Women’s division were Jiessel Marino, Elayza Villa, Kristine Flores, and Alphecca Gonzales. In boards three and four, Blue Eagles Team Captain Flores and Gonzales were both unable to tally wins for the team, conceding to UST’s Princes Oncita and Rohanisah Buto. Rookie Villa endured a lengthy contest against Josemier Panol, with the game ending in a stalemate. Meanwhile, veteran Marino was able to outwit UST’s Joanah Olay in board one, bagging Ateneo their sole win of the match.

Looking to keep their win streak alive, the Ateneo Men’s Chess Team will next face the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroon Woodpushers. Meanwhile, the Ateneo Women’s Chess team will look to capture their first win as they collide with the Adamson University (ADU) Lady Falcon Woodpushers. Both matchups are set to take place on Sunday, at 1:00 PM in the same venue as today’s games.
