ICYMI: Retooled Ateneo Track and Field Teams make comeback in UAAP Season 85

COMING BACK from a three-year hiatus, the Ateneo Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams opened their campaign with fresh spirits in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 Athletics Tournament yesterday afternoon. All their events were held at the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City.

Franxine Regalado was the sole athlete from the Ateneo Women’s Track and Field Team who competed on the first day in the 800-meter event. Regalado finished last in the first heat with a time of 2:54.52 seconds. With the loss, Regalado’s time was unable to secure a spot in the event’s finals.

To kick off the men’s events, Lucas Lopez capped off the first half of the decathlon by finishing second in Shotput with a result of 10.22m. The decathlete will continue the second half of his competitions today, consisting of the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500m run.

In the men’s 100m event, Blue Eagles Augusto Cruz, Isaiah Yu, John Gotladera, Dom Perez, competed in heats one to four, respectively. Yu led the Atenean side finishing 21st overall with a time of 11.79 seconds, followed by Cruz at 23rd, Gotladera at 24th, and Perez at 26th.

Jonathan Reyes was the team’s lone representative for the men’s 800m event, finishing 15th with a record of 2:13.11. Meanwhile, in the Pole vault competition, Lucas Lopez and Joaquin Ipapo struggled to clear in their attempts, both falling short of podium finishes.

To conclude the first day of events, Thirdy Runas and Carl Valenton competed in the men’s Shot Put event. Runas finished 15th with a result of 10.93m, while Valenton ranked 18th with an outcome of 8.59m.

Day 2 of the Athletics tournament will resume today, December 1, starting at 3:15 PM at the PhilSports Complex.
