THE ATENEO Blue Eagles concluded the thirteenth round of matches in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 82 Men’s Chess Tournament with a defeat at the hands of the University of the Philippines (UP), 1-3, on Saturday, October 26 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila City.

This result means that the Blue Eagles’ record dropped to an underwhelming 2-3-8 and a total of 19.5 points heading into the final round of matches.

Ateneo’s lineup featured Vince Edralin at first board. Rookie Kurt Ong was situated at board two, while Tristan Cervero and Team Captain Gavin Ong were seated at boards three and four, respectively.

Edralin, K. Ong, and G. Ong all fought to earn points for their side. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to overcome their UP counterparts. However, Cervero was able to pick up a win for the Blue Eagles after putting in a good performance and earning his side’s only point of the team-tie.

G. Ong was quick to highlight the positive side of a disappointing season. “We’re down to our last game of the season tomorrow. I can’t say that this has been the best season. We had so many tough games, but I would like to commend my teammates for continuing to fight even if we keep getting knocked down,” said Ong.

The Blue Eagles will hope to end their season on a positive note with a win against the University of the East in the final round of their UAAP Season 82 campaign at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 26 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila City.
