THE ATENEO Softball team will be looking to redeem themselves this UAAP Season 78 after a disappointing last-place finish the previous year. The team, however, must accomplish this with the loss of the services of seven players–most notably Season 77 Team Captains Lala Cruz and Catalina Altomonte–who have already graduated.

To compensate for the departures of their veterans, the team amped up its recruitment by acquiring nine rookies. According to Team Captains Angela Natividad and Clarisse Dacanay, player recruitment was a priority in order to create a stable foundation for the squad.

First baseman Angel Africa and utility infielder Sam Baterina lead this year’s recruiting class. Rounding out the infield recruits are second baseman Noelle Dela Cruz and third baseman Yla Trinidad. The Lady Eagles have also stocked up on pitchers, with Kaira Ventosa, Nikola Lacson, and Clariele Dacanay all capable on the mound. Meanwhile, the team’s two rookie catchers, Chesca Imperial and Gabby Macatulad have made great strides in improving behind the plate.

Preparation-wise, the team has focused on building stamina and strength in order to combat the long hours on the field. Discipline has also been another focal point for this rookie-laden team.

While the loss of veteran voices within the team could prove to be tough, it also presents an opportunity for the younger players to shine. As Dacanay puts it, “We’ve been considered underdogs for the past few years, so we’re all aiming to prove that underdogs can go on top.”
