THE ATENEO community has been invited to attend and participate in an event entitled “Katipunan Kontra Korupsyon (KKK),” to be held on September 11, Wednesday, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Miriam College.

According to Sanggunian President Dan Remo, KKK is a mobilization of students and faculty members from the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP-D), Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University.

Addressing the Sanggunian Central Board (CB) during its meeting held last September 6, Remo said KKK will “call for accountability from our government regarding the recent 10 billion peso scam [concerning the Priority Development Assistant Fund], and [will] call for more transparency in the government.”

The KKK will serve to supplement another prayer vigil for the abolition of pork to be held along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) on September 11.

The mass mobilization goes by the names “EDSA Tayo” and “EDSA 2013.”

According to an article on Interaksyon, various Filipino netizens were engaged in discussions concerning how to sustain momentum from the #MillionPeopleMarch held last August 26 in Luneta Park.

The agreed upon solution by the same netizens is to hold another mass mobilization.

An initiative was put forward by different organizers from UP-D and Miriam College to stage a similar event with the same purpose: To maintain the momentum generated from the #MillionPeopleMarch.

Remo said the organizers of KKK include the following: The UP-D vice chancellor for student affairs, UP-D University Student Council, Miriam College Institute Network for Social Action director and Miriam College Student Council.

Concerns

Fears regarding security issues during the KKK were downplayed by Remo, saying that the administration of Miriam College will be providing security along with officers from the Metro Manila Development Authority.

In addition, Remo stated that administrators from the three participating Katipunan Avenue-based schools, which includes Vice President for Social Development Jaime Hofileña, said that “the event will be safe, because the idea is to make it a festive and gimmicky type of thing, [which will have] no protests.”

Remo gave out the tentative schedule of KKK during the CB meeting.

According to him, the program will include the following: A preview of UP-D’s lantern parade, a zumba competition hosted by Miriam College, to be followed by “cultural presentations to be held by different student groups in Miriam.”

Regarding Ateneo’s participation, Remo stated that the KKK organizers are asking the Ateneo community to attend.

“The bare minimum [that the organizers want from us] is attendance. As for what gimmick we will implore, that is up to us,” Remo said.
