AN ORANGE six-wheeler Fuso truck rammed into the glass front doors of Bo’s Coffee Katipunan at approximately 4:40 pm today, November 23. Before hitting Bo’s, the truck collided with three other cars and a motorcycle.

Joseph Pierr Teodosio, who was sitting on the coffee shop’s terrace, said that the speeding truck dragged a Black Volvo and the motorcycle towards Bo’s. Both vehicles were moving along the Katipunan strip.

Kinaladkad nung trak yung motorsiklo. Nung nabangga na [sa Bo’s], naipit sa ilalim yung motorsiklo (The truck dragged the motorcycle. When it hit Bo’s, the motorcycle got stuck under the truck),” he said.

A report from abs-cbnNEWS.com said that Michael de la Torre, the motorcycle driver, was critically injured and rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center. Teodisio said that the security guard had a minor cut in his head.

A Starex van, a Ford Explorer, and a Honda CR-V parked near the coffee shop were also badly hit. All three cars had been smashed, leaving them with broken windshields and dented bumpers. Nearby cars were also scratched and bumped due to the strong collision.

Teodosio, a truck driver, said that the Fuso was probably moving at 50 kilometers per hour or faster.

As of press time, there are no official explanations for the crash. Security guards from nearby Rustan’s Supermarket and Mercury Drugstore said, however, that the truck lost its brakes. The driver fled after his truck smashed into the coffee shop.

Later, the truck driver was taken into custody by police from the Quezon City Police District 9, said the abs-cbnNEWS.com report.

  • My family’s guess was that the truck lost control as it was coming from a uturn or something. Ang sama naman nung truck driver!

No one got seriously hurt? Uhm we sort of saw a leg on the ground underneath the wheel…

  • Well, yeah… I agree to the person above. Pero hindi naman siguro masama yung driver but napangunahan lang ng takot. I just hope he surrenders na lang kasi accident is still an accident and he still did it intentionally or unintentionally. Sayang yung mga cars though 😛

  • it was horrible.. the motorcycle driver got “stuck in the gulong” and his bones were broken.. the guard said.. I was there… I walked really fast cause the sight was unbearable :((

  • I think it is time that we should adopt a law, similar to the Hong Kong government, to create a vehicle age limit of 6 years and for the registration of the vehicle to undertake a general re-examination every four years – making it more expensive to keep old vehicles thus keeping our roads free from traffic and accidents.

    http://www.gov.hk/en/residents/transport/vehicle/carowner.htm

The problem with our current system is that though it may be cheap for the owners, it really just passes the expense to innocent drivers who could hardly support his/her family.

Its a good thing that nobody got seriously hurt.

  • may nag cut daw kasi na car and the truck was just too fast lang daw.. ugh, the guy wasnt “stuck in the wheels”.. he was lying down near there.. its impossible na nabunggo siya ng truck, coz if he was, he would have died (God forbid that).. by the way, 4 sophies were in the 2nd floor of bo’s that time..

  • oh yeah, another comment pala, it was ok that the driver fled for a while.. because there was a chance that he might get beaten by the angry owners of the cars.. but inquirer.net said that he did surrender.. the breaks malfunctioned..

  • my friends and i were seated in the spot where the truck and crv rammed into bo’s. the truck driver had no chance to flee because his vehicle was sandwiched in between several vehicles. he surrendered to barangay officials for fear of being mobbed by the crowd. sadly the motorcycle rider did not survive the entire ordeal. he expired shortly after being taken to the hospital.

  • The company that owns the truck should come out with a press release soon.

May the motorcycle rider rest in peace…:(

  • Regarding the Philippines adopting the Hong Kong law, I think that could be a stretch because:

    1. Not all can afford cars every six years;
    2. A general reexamination is moot because LTO is so corrupt and will eventually approve any reexamination as long as malicious elements bribe them; and
    3. If you check the statistics, more accidents occur because of recklessness rather than malfunctions. I’ve seen a lot of them through Katipunan avenue that it’s not even surprising anymore.

So, there. Just my two cents’ (or is it three?) worth.

  • Agreed with Gerard Santos about the law in HK.
I have lived in other countries where a similar law is in place, and it has not significantly reduced the number of traffic accidents. It’s also crippling for families who cannot replace their old car, especially in places where public transport is severely lacking or too expensive.

However, I would imagine it can be done for businesses with large trucks etc. Companies should take responsibility–if they are willing to risk the safety of their drivers & others on the road, then they will only lose.
