THE ATENEO Blue Eagles clinched a flawless victory, 3-0, over Adamson University (AdU) in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Men’s Table Tennis tournament earlier today, at the Makati Coliseum.
Mahendra Cabrido kicked off the Blue and White’s postseason campaign with a bout against AdU’s Paolo Monforte. Determined to make light work of the Soaring Falcon, the Blue Eagle displayed an unstoppable dominance that allowed him to easily claim all three sets, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8.
Meanwhile, Andrew Uy was thrust into a do-or-die standoff with Adamson’s Jed Villaviray, 3-2. Although he dropped two sets against the Soaring Falcon, A. Uy’s valiance helped him bounce back from a rocky performance to close the fifth set with a large lead, 11-4.
The Katipunan-based duo of Zherdel Fresco and Sean Uy then captured the team-tie for the Blue and White. Although a few reception errors plagued their gameplay, Fresco and S. Uy cleared the duo of Jhon Balucos and Amiel Lagorra, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6.
Ateneo maintains its spot in second place with a win-loss record of 9-3. The Blue Eagles are set to take on the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Paddlers in the championship match tomorrow, November 26, at the Makati Coliseum.
