THE ATENEO Lady Eagles dominated the Adamson Lady Falcons in a decisive 4-1 team-tie win in their third match of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81 Women’s Badminton Tournament, on Sunday, September 30, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Ever-reliable team captain, Samantha Ramos, set the tone for the afternoon making light work of her opponent Jhay Anne Macabenta. Ramos walked away unscathed winning in two straight-sets with a score of 21-10 and 21-9.
The second match saw Ateneo’s Aly Roxas take on Adamson’s Clydel Pada. Despite Roxas’ valiant efforts in the first set, 19-21, she was unable to carry that same vigor in the second set, dropping the second set 10-21 to give the Lady Falcons a match.
While Chanelle Lunod and Geva De Vera had already warmed up to take to the court in the first doubles match, Adamson’s Macabenta was unable to compete due to injury. This resulted in a walkover for the Lady Eagles.
With the team tie score now at 2-1 in favor of the Lady Eagles, the second doubles pairing of Ramos and Bea Felizardo aimed to secure the team-tie win against Pada and Mika Aquino. After losing the first set 18-21, the tandem found their stride in the second and third sets, winning 21-13 and 21-11, to secure the decisive victory to add to the win-streak of the Lady Eagles.
In the last match of the day, Geva De Vera, the undeniable hero of last week’s team-tie, ended things with a bang. Despite her match not having any bearing on the day’s results, De Vera still made sure not to ease up. She took the match against Aquino in straight sets, 21-8 and 21-11.
This win puts the Ateneo lady shuttlers at 3-0 in the elimination round standings of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81.
Their next game will be against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigresses on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at 1pm in the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
