THE ATENEO Men’s and Women’s Chess teams competed in the eleventh round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Chess tournament on Saturday, March 24.

Both the Blue and Lady Eagles ended the round without securing a win against Adamson University (AdU) and the University of the Philippines (UP), respectively, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in the University of Santo Tomas (UST). The Blue Eagles currently stand at 6.5, while the Lady Eagles’ stand at 3.

Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles fell to UP at a 0-4 score. Minella Salvador started the day with a loss against Martina Casiano on board one. On board two, Janela Salazar dropped her match against Woman National Master Arvie Lozano.

Boards three and four had similar results, as Lady Eagles Aryanne De Ocampo and Jasmine Principe were taken down by Ynna Canape and Ruth De Guzman, ending the round at a devastating 0-4 finish.

Nanghihinayang kami sa missed chances kasi ang daming beses na kaya naman, napapakawalan lang (We regret the missed chances because there were many times we could have done something, but we missed them),” said Principe. “Still, we see this as an experience that the team can learn from for the next season. Laban lang hanggang dulo (Just fight until the end).”

Blue Eagles

The Blue Eagles were taken down by AdU at a 0-4 score. Joseph Tsoi forfeited his match, giving AdU an early 0-1 lead. The results on the remaining boards were hardly favorable to the Blue Eagles, as Lance Ting, Keefe Tan and Gavin Ong were defeated by Marc Labog, Jayson Tapia, and Kristian Arellano, respectively. The Blue Eagles were sent home without a win.

The Blue and Lady Eagles’ next matchday is scheduled on Sunday, March 25, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in UST. The Blue Eagles will face De La Salle University (DLSU), while the Lady Eagles will take on Far Eastern University (FEU) in Round 12.
