THE ATENEO Men’s and Women’s Chess teams competed in the tenth round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Chess tournament on Sunday, March 18.

The Blue and Lady Eagles both remain winless after they falling victim to Far Eastern University (FEU) and the University of Sto. Tomas (UST), respectively, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in UST.

The day ended with both Blue and White squads failing to add to their season score. The Blue Eagles currently stand at 6.5, while the Lady Eagles’ stand at 3.

Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles were taken down by UST at a 0-4 score. Ana De Duque lost to Highzzy Manaloto on board one, while Aryanne De Ocampo dropped a matchup with Cyamir Villanueva to give UST a two-point lead.

Boards three and four shared the same grim results, as Lady Eagles Jasmine Principe and Jill Feliciano were bested by Mary Anne Alcantara and Charlotte Paez, bringing the round to a close.

“[It’s been a] tough season talaga eh. Compared to the previous season, nag improve talaga yung games namin pero yung problem lang is converting the advantage to a win,” said Principe.

Blue Eagles

The Blue Eagles were defeated by FEU at a 0-4 score. Joseph Tsoi fell to Rhenzi Sevillano, allowing FEU to take a 0-1 lead. Boards two and three had similar results, as Lance Ting and Keefe Tan were bested by National Master Paul Evangelista and Romy Fagon, respectively.

Team Captain Gavin Ong was then defeated by Kristian Abuton, ending the round at a 0-4 score.

The Blue and Lady Eagles’ next matchday is scheduled on Saturday, March 24, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in UST. The Blue Eagles will face Adamson University (AdU), while the Lady Eagles will take on the University of the Philippines (UP) in Round 11.
