THE ATENEO Men’s and Women’s Chess teams continued the fifth round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 Chess tournament on Saturday, March 25.

The Blue Eagles took on Adamson University (AdU), while the Lady Eagles took on the University of the East (UE), at the Quadricentennial Pavilion in the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles past struggles in earlier rounds followed them to round five as they failed to pick up a win. The day ended at a 0-4 score in favor of UE, and the Lady Eagles failed to add to their season score of one.

On board one for Ateneo, Minella Sandoval dropped her match with UE’s Virginie Ruaya, while Aryanne De Ocampo represented the Blue and White on board two but was taken down by Crystal Jade Werba.

The remaining boards featured Captain Jasmine Principe and Jill Feliciano as they took on Cristhina Medenilla and Nicole Chu, respectively. However, Principe and Feliciano fell to their UE opponents as the round came to a close.

Blue Eagles

The Blue Eagles featured a sophomore squad in round five as Gavin Ong, Keefe Tan, Joseph Tsoi, and Lance Ting took their shots against AdU’s Khristian Arellano, Jayson Tapia, Remark Bortolome, and Marc Labog, respectively.

On board one, Tsoi lost to Bortolome, giving AdU the lead. Ting and Tan were also defeated on boards two and three, bringing the score to 0-3, in favor of AdU.

Ateneo’s last stand was Ong, who eventually fell to Arellano, sending the Blue Eagles home before they could add a point to their season score.

“Today’s performance is demoralizing. It may be tempting to lose our confidence, but this won’t stop us from playing the sport we love. We are optimistic with tomorrow’s game, hoping for the best always. For the rest of the season, I hope we develop more as a team, more than the wins and losses,“ said Ong

The Blue and Lady Eagles’ next match day is scheduled on Sunday, March 4 in UST. The Blue Eagles will face the University of the Philippines while the Lady Eagles will take on National University.
