ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Jose Ma. Edito “Jo-Ed” Tirol from the History Department begins his term as the new director of the Office of Admission of Aid (OAA) today, June 1.

Tirol replaced previous director Jumela Sarmiento, who will be on sabbatical leave for the next school year.

Vice President of the Loyola Schools Maria Luz Vilches formally asked Tirol if he was interested in the position last November, to which he accepted after a week of consideration.

Although Tirol will be spending most of his time for administrative work, he will still retain one class per semester.

“There’s a part of me that will miss full-time teaching. I’ve spent 20 years of my life in the classroom. But at this point in my academic career, I’m also very excited to take this new opportunity to learn another way to serve the institution and the community at large,” he said.

Tirol has yet to discuss plans for scholarship concerns in early June with the concerned OAA team. However, he said that he is aiming to help more deserving students enter and stay in the Ateneo regardless of financial status.

He also said that he hopes to find ways to increase the percentage of scholars in the university. Of the recently graduated Class of 2017, 21% were scholars.
