THE ATENEO Track and Field (ATF) teams drew mixed results on the second day of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 88 Athletics Tournament. The competition took place on November 8, at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
Following today’s events, the medal tally courtesy of the Men’s Team holds steady with a total of two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal. In the points department, the Men’s Team remained at 52 points, while the Women’s Team increased their tally to seven points.
200m
Eager to leave a mark, Sammie Souza and Francesca Cheng were the first to set foot on the track. Despite a valiant effort, the Blue Eagles ultimately brought up the rear of the pack as they finished 26th and 27th with a time of 28.89 and 31.39 seconds, respectively.
Looking to avenge their teammates, Matthew Luis Angeles played in the first heat of today’s festivities. Leaving everything on the field, he finished in sixth place in heat one with a time of 22.44 seconds. Angeles was immediately followed by Nash Candelario, who ran in the second heat, timed at 22.68 seconds. Both competitors landed in 10th and 15th place overall, respectively.
Triple Jump
Determined to provide Ateneo’s sole points of the day, former UAAP girls’ gold medalist Jonalyn Halasan made her collegiate debut in the Triple Jump competition.
While Halasan incurred fouls in her first two attempts, she eventually exceeded her personal best record by leaping a distance of 11.71 meters in her third attempt. This result propelled Halasan to an eighth-place finish, consequently earning 1 point for the Blue and White.
Aiming to improve on their current standing, the ATF teams will return to the oval for day three of the tournament tomorrow, November 8, at 7:40 AM in the same venue.
