THE ATENEO Track and Field (ATF) teams showed strong performances across the board during day three of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 Athletics Tournament. Action took place yesterday, November 8, at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
With the penultimate day done and dusted, the Men’s team brings home two silver medals, bolstering their tally to a total of two gold, three silver, and one bronze medal whilst moving to 84 points. Meanwhile, the Women’s Team bagged a respectable eight points for today’s efforts, improving to 15 points total.
Javelin Throw
Kicking off the day’s events, Emilio Perez showcased his athleticism in the Javelin Throw. With an impressive mark of 59.28 meters, the Blue Eagle sealed silver and 12 big points for the Blue and White, as well as the first medal of the day for Ateneo.
400m Men’s
Moving onto the Men’s Division, Hussein Loraña, Theo Angeles, Er Yake Mengorio, and Nash Candelario took part in the 400m sprint.
Loraña was the first to step into the oval, with a desire to bring home yet another medal. In a race of fine margins, the rookie standout ultimately came home second, just one hundredth (0.01) of a second shy of winning the heat, with a time of 48.26 seconds. Nevertheless, his time was good enough for second overall to punch his ticket to the final.
Joining him in the finals is Er Yake Mengorio, who dashed to victory in the second heat, winning by two tenths (0.2) of a second with a storming lap of 48.71. Meanwhile, Theo Angeles finished fourth with a time of 50.41, good for 12th overall.
Rounding out the pack, Nash Candelario took part in the third and final heat, finishing in fifth place with a time of 50.44, constituting a 13th-place standing overall.
With Loraña and Mengorio advancing on their qualifying times, the duo once again donned the Blue and White for the 400m Final later in the day.
The 800m gold medalist, Loraña, continued his stellar form in the championships with a second medal finish, clocking 48.18 seconds, for silver in the category.
Mengorio, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a medal finish, finishing just eight hundredths of a second (0.08) shy of third place, with a time of 48.38 to settle for fourth.
Discus Throw
The day’s play continued with Yden Candelario stepping up to the plate in the Discus Throw. Candelario finished 13th in the overall rankings after she registered her best mark at 27.53 meters in the finals.
4x100m Relay
Wrapping up what has been a fruitful day, the quartet of Jonalyn Halasan, Krisha Aguillon, Rhea Lego, and Sammie Souza was slated to compete in the 100m Relay. Displaying fluid coordination, the Katipunan-based squad came home to finish in fourth place with a combined time of 49.45 seconds, earning them eight points.
In light of the anticipated inclement weather brought by Typhoon Uwan, the Blue Eagles aim to leave a lasting impression today, November 9, on the final day of UAAP Athletics.
