BATTLING THROUGH rain and tough opposition, the Ateneo Women’s Football Team (AWFT) opened their Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub (AVSH) Quad Meet campaign with a 0-0 draw against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Booters, before falling 1-3 to University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons. Both matches were held on July 27 at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus City.

Game 1 vs DLSU

The Blue and White entered the rain-soaked field looking to utilize their newcomer energy early on, as they hustled to apply pressure on the Lady Booters’ defensive line. However, the rookies’ first preseason rivalry meeting proved to be a challenge, as their unfamiliarity clashed against La Salle’s persevering defense. With neither side finding an opportunity to attack, Ateneo entered the halfway point deadlocked at 0-0.

Looking to get ahead, the booters from Katipunan made quick adjustments against  DLSU’s attempts to stretch the Ateneo defense. However, the Blue Eagles were unable to crack the Lady Booters’ cover, as they struggled to break past the back four.

With both teams standing their ground, the Blue Eagles settled for a draw at the final whistle, 0-0.

Game 2 vs UP

Looking to top their previous draw with the Fighting Maroons, the Blue Eagles entered the pitch with renewed intent, but with the same strategy of stifling the opposition’s defense upfront. However, their efforts fell short after Fighting Maroon Hannah Muros broke through the back line to smash in a goal, 0-1.

The Blue and White struggled against the Fighting Maroons’ relentless pace, enabling another goal by UP’s Vrendelle Nuera, 0-2. With their backs against the wall, the Blue Eagles turned to KC Zalamea, who made a quick run across the top of the box and buried a shot from distance, 1-2. However, UP forward Angelica Dizon immediately responded with a stunning long-range drive to seal Ateneo’s defeat, 1-3.

After mixed results in the meet’s opening, the AWFT looks to emerge victorious against the University of Santo Tomas Lady Booters on Sunday, August 3, 3:00 PM, at the same venue.
