THE ATENEO Men’s Golf Team put on a strong showing at the 2025 Philippine Intercollegiate Golf Series (PHIGS), finishing at second place in the team event category. The tournament took place over three action-packed days—February 23, March 2, and March 9—at the Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club in San Rafael, Bulacan.

Representing the Blue Eagles in Team A were Team Captain Paqo Barro, Glenn Unabia, Enzo Fianza, Schmuel Tan, and substitute player Franco Rivera. Meanwhile, Migo Aquino, Emilio Curran, Matthew Mendoza, and Enzo Udasco donned the Blue and White in Team B.

Ateneo’s Team A accumulated 92 points in the opening round, powered by Unabia’s 33-point performance, Barro’s 30 points, and Fianza’s 29. Their outing placed them in second, only trailing first-placed De La Salle University (DLSU)’s commanding 111 points and ahead of third-placed University of the Philippines’ 86 points. Team B ended the first leg in sixth place with a total of 76 team points, spearheaded by Curran’s 29.

In the second round, the Katipunan-based squad showcased their consistency, putting up 91 points, with Barro’s 35-point outing leading the charge. This effort kept Team A in second place heading into the final round. Curran continued to be the backbone of Team B, with his 30 points along with Aquino’s 26 and Mendoza’s 23 keeping them at sixth place.

Shifting into higher gear in the final round, Barro spearheaded Ateneo’s charge with his tournament-high 37 points. Unabia and Tan further supported Barro with 31 and 29 markers of their own, bringing their total to 280 points by the end of the round. Despite their best efforts, Ateneo’s Team A ultimately settled for second as they were unable to surmount DLSU, who concluded the tournament with 316 points.

Team B capped off their tournament stint at sixth with an 82-point round, bringing their total to 237. Curran continued to spearhead their charge, notching 33 points in the final leg, with Udasco and Aquino scoring 25 and 24 markers of their own.

Individually, Barro’s 102 points and Unabia’s 93 points were enough to secure them fifth and seventh place, respectively. Meanwhile, Curran’s 92 points secured himself  the eighth spot in the leaderboards.

With their promising performances to start the year, the Loyola Heights-based squad hopes to ascend further in future tournaments to secure their status as the top dogs in the sport.
