THE ATENEO Track and Field Team (ATF) continued their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 campaign yesterday at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

After an astounding opening day performance, the Men’s Team was unable to carry on with their momentum, with both them and the Women’s Team failing to secure points in day two of the competition.

200m

The day kicked off with the Women’s 200m event, with veteran Jasha Tan and sophomore Francesca Cheng being joined by rookie Krisha Aguillon. Aguillon built on her effort from yesterday’s 100m event, finishing at 26.49 seconds. This finish landed the three-time Palarong Pambansa winner at fourth-place in her heat and 13th overall.

Meanwhile, sprinters Tan and Cheng passed the finish line at 28.98 seconds and 31.95 seconds, respectively.

In the Men’s Division, key holdovers Joaquin Ipapo and Nash Candelario returned to the oval alongside debuting Blue Eagle Chonel Okolo. Team Captain Ipapo sprinted with a speed of 23.13 seconds to finish fifth in his heat and 17th overall.

Following the skipper, Candelario valiantly crossed the line despite enduring physical struggles along the way. The sophomore sprinter recorded a time of 23.32 seconds to place fourth in his heat and 19th overall.

Meanwhile, Okolo placed seventh in his heat after clocking in at 24.03 seconds. Despite formidable completions, the Atenean sprinters failed to qualify for the finals.

Long Jump

The final event of the day featured Blue Eagle rookies Deyo Chung and Mikan Reyes, who stepped up for the Men’s Long Jump. Despite their efforts, the Atenean duo were unable to generate points for the Blue and White.

In his first official appearance in the event, Chung jumped to 5.66 meters, with former Ateneo High School athlete Reyes following closely behind at a mark of 5.60 meters.

With the Men’s Team looking to reignite their ascension in the UAAP Athletics Championships and the Women’s Team further motivated to secure their first points, the ATF returns today, November 19, at 8:00 AM in the same venue.
