Ateneo Women’s Swimming reclaims glory as UAAP Season 87 champions

REDEMPTION FUELED the Ateneo Women’s Swimming Team as they concluded a victorious University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 campaign, reclaiming the championship crown they last held in Season 82. 

The Blue and White bagged four additional medals and one new UAAP record yesterday at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Capas, Tarlac.

Backstroke

Dictating the tempo from the outset, Team Captain Sam Colonel led the way in the 50 Long Course (LC) Meter race, seizing the silver medal with a time of 31.03 seconds in the opening game.

Meanwhile, Season 85 MVP Lora Amoguis showed her grit in the same event, clocking in at 32.24 seconds to earn a seventh-place finish.

Breaststroke

In the Women’s 200 LC Meter heat, Annika Isip bolstered Ateneo’s gold haul, dominating the event with an impressive 2:42.60 finish to mark yet another standout moment for the Blue Eagles.

Just shy of another podium finish, Maica Angela Garcia secured fourth place with a time of 2:46.05. Close behind, Char Romanos rounded out the top five, clocking in at 2:49.50.

Butterfly

Adding another triumph to Ateneo’s campaign, Mishka Sy soared to a bronze finish in the Women’s 200 LC Meter heat with a 2:24.22 record.

Sam Andrei Doragos followed with a commendable fifth-place effort, gliding through the water to post a time of 2:31.07. Completing Ateneo’s charge in the event, Mara Leandra Cruz pushed through to finish at 2:38.56 for eighth-place.

Freestyle

Carving through the water with seasoned prowess, Kimi Manuel delivered a solid showing in the Women’s 50 LC Meter Freestyle event, registering a swift time of 28.06 seconds to tie for fifth place with De La Salle University’s Hannah Drelyn Sanchez.

Relay

To cap off a stellar season, the Ateneo Women’s Swimming Team captured the gold while setting a new UAAP record in the 4×100 Meter Medley Relay with an outstanding time of 4:29.94. The powerhouse quartet of Coronel, Isip, Doragos, and Manuel propelled Ateneo to an impressive 350-point total, sealing the championship in commanding fashion.

Having reclaimed their title, this victory not only reinforces the legacy of  the Women’s Swimming Team but also sets a promising foundation for future seasons as they aim to build upon this success and maintain their competitive edge in the UAAP arena.

  1. ATENEO Blue Eagles – 350 (7-8-6)
  2. UP Fighting Maroons – 337 (7-4-5)
  3. DLSU Green Tankers – 249 (4-4-4)
  4. UST Tigersharks – 209 (3-5-6)
