THE PHILIPPINES’ lone rowing bet, Joanie Delgaco, capped off her impressive medal bid at the 2024 Summer Olympics with a sixth-place finish in the Women’s Single Sculls quarterfinals. The event was held earlier today at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in Paris, France.
Challenged by seasoned veterans in the event, the Filipina was in for a tough task heading into the race. However, Delgaco displayed an impressive showing despite her longshot against defending Olympic champion Emma Twigg of New Zealand, among other established co-qualifiers.
Unperturbed by her fellow rowers, Delgaco continued to conquer the currents to solidify her position in the race, as she closely tailed behind Spain’s Virginia Díaz Rivas at fifth with only a one-second deficit at the 500-meter mark.
Overtaken by Azerbaijan’s Diana Dymchenko, Delgaco mustered up determination at the 1000-meter stretch to increase speed. However, her solid start and arduous drives fell short at the hands of Serbia’s Jovana Arsić, as Delgaco clocked in at 7:58.30, landing her in the sixth spot.
Although Delgaco is now out of the medal race, the Filipina rower will still compete in the classification stages to determine her final overall ranking.
