SHOWCASING THEIR prowess on the fairway, the Ateneo Golf Team (AGT) completed their 2024 Philippine Developmental Intercollegiate Golf Series (PHDIG) campaign with three teams on the podium. The competition was held on February 11, 18, and 25, 2024 at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in the City of General Trias, Cavite.

In one of the biggest intercollegiate golf tournaments in the country, the Blue and White went up against De La Salle University (DLSU), University of the Philippines (UP), De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), and Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU).

Men’s Category

Seasoned stalwart Paolo Joaquin Barro dominated the Men’s Category, copping an individual plum with his gold-medal finish, surpassing DLSU’s Perry Bucay and DLS-CSB’s Sean Granada, who finished second and third, respectively.

Barro’s golden performance was evident from the second day of the event as he topped the fray with 35 points, easily slotting himself at solo first.

After three weeks of competition, the Men’s Team-1, composed of Barro, Riggs Illescas, Andres Lorenzo, and Pierre Ticzon, was only a couple of points shy of striking gold. They eventually settled for an admirable silver-medal finish to their tally after the contest.

Meanwhile, the Blue Eagles grabbed one more award as Men’s Team-2 composed of Chan Hyun, Enzo Fianza, Graeme Tamayo, and Anton Lao, finished in third place to round out their spectacular showing.

On the other hand, Agustin Lorenzo, Tyler Zamuco, Saldo Arcilla, and Raymond Zhang competed for Ateneo Men’s Team-3 while Michel Romero, Anton Asuncion, Martin Co, and Schmuel Tan suited up for Men’s Team-4.

Women’s Category

Similar to the Men’s Team-1, Women’s Team-1 concluded the tourney at second overall alongside Breanne Tan, Monique Mendoza, Renee Heredia, and defending individual champion Emilia Fianza, giving their all for the Blue and White.

Rounding out the Blue Eagle contingent were Isa De Jesus, Vianca Uy, Annika Jalbuena, and Maxine Mendoza, who donned the Blue and White for Women’s Team-2.

In their first major tournament of the year, the Loyola Heights-based golfers’ remarkable outings at the PHDIG should be indicative of similar performances to come as the AGT sets its sights on upcoming tournaments.
