A DROUGHT of almost two decades has ended.

Capping off a historic University Athletic Association of the Philippine (UAAP) Season 86 campaign, the Ateneo Men’s Chess Team etched a draw versus the Adamson University (AdU) Soaring Falcons. The contest between the two universities occurred earlier today at the FEU Institute of Technology in the City of Manila.

This result cemented a silver podium finish for the Blue and White, ending a near two-decade-long podium dry spell.

Today’s lineup for the Blue Eagles for their final contest against AdU included Paul Matthew Llanillo, Jasper Faeldonia, Khalil Kis-ing and Colin Chua.

In a well-fought battle of attrition under 68 moves, Llanillo came out on top and annihilated Alfonzo Olendo with just three pieces left on both ends to seal a 1-0 win on board one. On the other end, Kis-ing subdued his opponent Jolam Ballombar, bagging Ateneo their second victory of the day on board three.

Meanwhile, Faeldonia suffered a quick defeat within 37 moves versus John Rocel Simon in board two. Moreover, Chua also conceded victory to John Sunga after a lengthy bout on board four.

Team Captain Khalil Kis-ing, who at the end of season 85, shared his wishes of making the podium one day, expressed how elated he was to fulfill that goal and bring a trophy to Ateneo. “[It] feels good to be part of history, I can’t explain how much it means to me,” Kis-ing said.

The Atenean skipper also highlighted how proud he was of his teammates, gave thanks to his parents for their unrelenting support, and sang praises for his coaching staff throughout the season. Kis-ing also pointed out the Ateneo community, giving them his gratitude for their support and patience.

Adding on to the Blue Eagles’ medal haul this season, Janmyl Tisado and Paul Matthew Llanillo took home individual gold medals as a result of their great contributions. Additionally, Tristan Cervero and Khalil Kis-ing bagged silver and bronze individual medals, respectively.

With this seismic shift in Chess success for Ateneo, the Blue Eagles will look to make even more history as their quest for UAAP gold continues in Season 87.
