THE ATENEO Blue Eagles went winless (0-2) in Day 1 of their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 85 Men’s 3×3 Basketball campaign. The games against the University of the East (UE) and National University (NU), respectively, were held today at Calatagan South Beach in the Province of Batangas.

Matchup versus UE

The Blue Eagles started on the wrong foot as they saw themselves down early, 0-4, against the UE Red Warriors. Ateneo gave UE a taste of their own medicine as the Blue and White corked their own 4-0 run to tie the game, 4-4.

The game saw another four-point deficit for Ateneo halfway through the match, 6-10. Ateneo managed to slowly chip at UE’s lead with their length, highlighted by David Diaz’s alley-oop pass to Kyle Ong, 10-10. Diaz continued his stellar play as he hit a two-pointer one minute later to tie the match again, 12-12.

Both teams went scoreless in the last two minutes before UE’s Vlair Lingolingo hit a two-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in the game clock, 12-14. JC Fetalvero pushed the game to overtime with a two-point shot of his own, 14-14. In overtime, UE’s Josiah Alcantara hit a stepback jumper, followed by Lingolingo hitting a tough reverse layup over Ong and Diaz to seal the game, 14-16. Fetalvero led Ateneo with seven points while Diaz registered five points and 14 rebounds.

Matchup versus NU

Later in the afternoon, Ateneo faced the NU Bulldogs. Similar to the UE game, Ateneo had a slow start, allowing NU to build an early four-point lead, 0-4. The Blue and White had a hard time containing NU’s drive early in the match but Jynno Ladimo helped Ateneo trim the deficit. Ladimo scored Ateneo’s first seven points built on three two-pointers, 7-8.

Ateneo continued persevering throughout the match but the Bulldogs’ physicality affected the Blue Eagles’ defense. Down four points late in the match, Fetalvero was fouled during his two-point attempt. Fetalvero made one out of his two attempts to keep the game at a close distance, 12-15. However, NU managed to stave off any comeback attempts from the Ateneo side. Ladimo emerged as the top scorer for Ateneo after finishing with seven points. Diaz and Fetalvero poured in three and two points, respectively.

The Blue Eagles will look for their first win of the tournament as they face the defending champions University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers tomorrow at 8:25 AM at the same venue.
